State police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the arrest of at least 40 BIM members for “conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace”, but she said that no one was injured.

They were marching to demand creation of the breakaway state of Biafra in south-eastern Nigeria.

On 30 May, 1967, Colonel Emeka Ojukwu, unilaterally declared the independent Republic of Biafra.
